Ocean Grove Revitalization Project

I think this would be great for all I've been a resident 37 years and I remember going to that beach at the early childhood age when my grandmother live on Ocean Grove ave and I would hear the stories from her about when she was a child and she would say that Swansea beach use to blow the popular Daytona Beach away. My grandmother has been deceased for more than 15 years but if there's any way or anything that may somehow make her smile this waterfront project would be it so I am all for this project I would love to give my children the experience I once had there or better give my children the even better time my grandmother enjoyed. I think it would be great to get a community to come together and unite and do some volunteering everyone has some special talent that they could bring to the table to help out on this some people may have experience in construction some May have engineering experience, if we could bring all are talents to the table on this we could have a nice asset right here in our town. This could be a chance to bring in revenue from out of towners and would be great for local business.

WORRIES

I really like the idea but I personally don't believe it can work. Born and raised in Ocean Grove, or what us locals call the "O.G." I am a little skeptical of this plan. I think the ideas are great, however I do not think this location or area is fitting for such a project. Not anymore at least. Also, I don't know how I feel about spending millions of dollars for in my opinion, a risky gamble. People who don't live here don't understand, THESE STREETS CAN BE TOUGH !! Ocean Grove is just a borough of Fall River. Its a different lifestyle in Ocean Grove than what it is in North Swansea or Somerset. From Coles River Bridge to Jillians Restaurant on Wilbur Ave 103 some neighborhoods can be tough. It the past two years there have been 3 homocides, multiple ODs, and drugs still continue to run the streets. Growing up in the neighborhood, I personally have stories that show the gloom of what life is like there. The amount of abandoned buildings in the area is unfortunate. I remember as a kid we used to hang out and party in them, and believe me there were a lot. Here is a list of all the abandoned structures in Ocean Grove: The Bluffs, for a long time St. Michaels Church, Ambulance building on Louis Street, Ocean Grove Walk In near Sunoco, The old St Michaels school before destruction for condos in 2006, Ocean Front Restaurant before Benchwarmers opened, and other miscellaneous buildings. I really think it is a good idea but the way things are today and especially how people and children are and act I do not see a successful future. Just past August, an acquaintance of mine from the neighborhood was shot and killed as you may know and three weeks earlier a friend from Ocean Grove was killed in New Bedford. We live in the new America and those days of Coney Island and boardwalks I believe have simply passed us. People who live all year round in what were originally just summer cottages. Heroin and theft constantly lurk the streets. Granted, I would argue that in recent years things have shaped up a little, but then again if that were true I guess shooting and stabbing would not have occurred just 6 months ago. So I guess it depends on what "shaped up" really means. In northern parts of town the streets are rural roads with woods, trees, power lines trails, and land. In Ocean Grove, things are compacted and composed of little shacks where you have little property and your neighbor is practically in your kitchen. Little streets and alley ways that even as a kid I was scared to walk down, due to local thugs and punks willing to start a fight and take your wallet. People on drugs results in bad things, and I have seen it personally.

RE: WORRIES

SO WE SHOULD CHALK THIS ONE UP AND JUST GIVE UP ON IT...NOT EVEN TRY TO MAKE THE AREA BETTER...... GREAT PLAN !
DONT GIVE UP ON WHAT WAS ONCE A GREAT AREA, MAKE IT BETTER AND THINGS WILL CHANGE. MAKING IMPROVMENTS MAKES PROPERTY VALUES GO UP AND ABANDONED BUILDINGS NO LONGER ABANDONED... AND IS ALSO GREAT FOR LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS.
