YOGA FOR PEOPLE WITH EARLY PARKINSON’S

NEW BEDFORD MA- April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month. Coast to coast communities are uniting to raise awareness, raise funds, and raise hope for individuals and families affected by Parkinson’s.
An in-person yoga program for people with early Parkinson’s will begin on Friday, April 15, 2022 at 10:30am at SANGHA New Bedford, 693 Purchase Street, New Bedford MA 02740.
This small-group class will feature yoga postures/movements and standing practices on the mat, which are specifically tailored to address the challenges Parkinson’s may pose. Participants for this class should be able to get up and down from the floor safely without assistance. Yoga teachers Nanci Winterhalter and Jeff Costa will sensitively guide the classes.
Program fee for 6 weekly sessions is $75 dollars and scholarships are available. This program is supported by a grant from the American Parkinson Disease Association MA Chapter.
Nanci Winterhalter is a yoga teacher (E-RYT), a Certified Yoga for Cancer Teacher, an Accessible Yoga Certified Teacher and a Physical Therapist (MS, Columbia University). As a Professional Yoga Therapist C-IAYT, Nanci enjoys sharing the ancient and empowering path of yoga with anyone interested in this life affirming practice, regardless of ability or background. Her offerings include Hatha Yoga classes, Chair Yoga and Yoga for People with Parkinson’s.
It is Nanci’s intention to integrate the multi faceted benefits of yoga with the science of movement to enhance ease in body, mind and breath, resilience, relaxation, mental clarity and tranquility while exploring our connection to ourselves and each other in a loving, light-hearted way.
Jeff Costa is a yoga and fitness professional with over 30 years experience. A graduate of Boston University and the Kripalu School of Yoga and Health, Jeff is registered with Yoga Alliance at the E-RYT 500 level, is certified in Restorative Yoga, and is an Accessible Yoga Ambassador. His experience with special populations includes assisting Chair Yoga classes for people with later stage Parkinson’s, teaching Chair Yoga and Adaptive Yoga classes. He is the owner of Sangha New Bedford, a yoga community dedicated to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.
The mission of Sangha New Bedford is to provide a welcoming, inclusive, affordable and accessible safe space that supports the diverse community in New Bedford, MA with embodied, experiential practices in yoga, meditation, movement and the healing arts.
